IP Address Lookup

Any IP address can be geolocated with the free IP address lookup tool. You may look up IP addresses of any geo location to learn more about them.

The search results contain a wealth of information about the IP addresses, including:

  • the city
  • the state/region
  • the postal/zip code
  • the country name
  • the Internet service provider (ISP)
  • the time zone

Multiple agencies or users can use IP2Location and IPData data to locate the owner of an IPv4 or IPv6 address.

Results Of IP Address Location

When looking for an IP address location, the results can be hit or miss. There is no IP geolocation database that is completely correct. An IP address search yields data from multiple IP location databases, each of which reports differently. These data variations result in locational information that isn't always accurate. The location of your IP address is what appears on the IP address lookup tool, but it may not be your genuine location. Furthermore, the following elements all have an impact on geolocation data:

  • the location of the IP address registration
  • where the controlling agency (ISP) is located
  • if the user has a proxy connection
  • if the user has a VPN connection
  • whether the connection is cellular
  • if the user connects to an anonymous browser, like TOR

For example, suppose you are in the United States and the IP address's controlling agency is in Canada. In that case, the IP address lookup location data may show Canada as the IP location. It is not uncommon to encounter a Canadian IP address while searching for an IP address in the northern United States on a mobile device. Similarly, if your ISP is located in that state, your IP address may appear to be in that state.

Though the location information you collect may not be entirely exact, integrating the data you collect from the location finder will assist you in narrowing the location to the correct city. You can then use various web tools to try to discover the owner of the IP address. However, IP addresses cannot be used to pinpoint someone's specific location. An IP address can be used to map out the location, state, or nation from where an IP address originates, but it cannot be used to hunt someone down.

How Do I Lookup IP Address?

Enter the address you wish to look up in the IP address lookup tool above. The IP lookup tool will process the address query and produce the results described above. An IP location app can also be used to seek an IP address or to check IP address locations for a mobile device IP address lookup.

It is important to note that when you search IP addresses using the tool above or any other tools found when you Google 'IP address locator,' the result is your public IP address. This is distinct from your private IP address, which you may obtain from your computer. Learn how to check an IP address in Windows 7, Windows 10, Windows 11, or on an iPad to determine your device's private IP address.

If you want to know how to find your IP address, go to the WhatIsMyIP.com home page and look at the list of IP addresses. This is your public IP address; it will also tell you where your IP address is located and who your ISP is. You may perform a reverse IP address lookup after you have an IP address. A reverse IP lookup searches IP addresses for hostnames. A standard IP lookup returns the IP address of a website or domain; a reverse IP lookup returns the domain of an IP. Use the IP WHOIS lookup tool to determine who owns an IP address.

Updating Your IP Address Lookup

If you discover that your IP geolocation information is wrong, you may always contact any of our IP location data providers and request a correction. Use the IP address lookup tool to find your IP address and then contact the third-party providers indicated in the results.

Allow time for the updates to take effect, and then use the lookup tool to confirm that your IP address location is now right. You can also confirm updates listed on the websites of third-party suppliers.

Reporting IP Abuse

If you're seeking up an IP address because you've been the victim of IP abuse, you should report the abuse rather than attempting to manage it yourself. Often, the owner of the IP address is unaware that their computer is being used as a host in an attack; do not assume that the owner of the IP address is the person responsible for the abuse.

Conduct an IP WHOIS Lookup to obtain further IP address information, including abuse contact information for IP address owners. You can block the problematic IP address before filing a complaint with the authorities or your Internet service provider and letting them handle the situation.
